Chapter 17: Rulers
The Tao Te Ching: Warnings and Invitations
Of the best rulers
The people (only) know that they exist;
The next best they love and praise;
The next they fear;
And the next they revile.When they do not command the people’s faith,
Some will lose faith in them,
And then they resort to oaths!
But (of the best) when their task is accomplished, their work done,
The people all remark, “We have done it ourselves.”
Think of the work that left you feeling most inspired. The work that came from somewhere deeper, where time collapsed and what you were doing and who you were became the same thing. Someone led you there. Maybe you only recognized it later. A parent who saw something in you before you could name it. A teacher who handed you something real and then got out of the way. A mentor who believed in what you were capable of before you did.
The ideas were yours. The effort was yours. The outcome was yours. But they were your scaffolding. And when the recognition came, they folded quietly back into the crowd. Just another face, clapping. You had to look for them afterward. They were the one smiling like they already knew.
Now think of the one who jumped up on stage and grabbed the medal before it could reach your hand. Who leaned into the microphone and thanked everyone who made it possible, beginning with themselves.
